56 Inch, 55 Pound Mammoth Pike Caught on Rainy Lake in Ontario

Here’s an email that has been passed around lately and I though I would share it with everyone since it is related to the sight.

The story goes that this fellow was out fishing on Rainy Lake in Ontario bordering Minnesota. He was fishing for Pike and had caught a 36 incher, a good catch by any standards, and as he was reeling it in this mammoth Pike tried to eat his catch! The fisherman grabbed his net and pulled both of the fish in the boat. The mammoth Pike was measured at 56 inches long and weighed 55 pounds which is apparently a new Canadian record. I can’t verify the authenticity of the story but here are the pictures that came along with it. Pretty darn impressive if you ask me.

This fish is from across the pond in Europe. It was not caught in Rainy Lake or anywhere in N. America. The second photo is not related to that European monster.

Thanks Roger. You’re the second to say that the pictures are unrelated. I always suspect these stories are fake, but I guess you never know. Pretty amazing regardless.

I got the same pics in an e-mail, but there was a 3rd picture, similar to the one of the guy holding the pike, but from a different angle. Also, the e-mail text was a little different… it said he caught it “on the Winnipeg River, by Seven Sisters, in Manitoba. (Just North East of Winnipeg).” I also questioned the “record” claim, and according to a site linked from the official Manitoba government site, the record in Manitoba for a Northern Pike is 60.5 inches (caught in 2004)… so the 56 inches isn’t enough to be a Canadian record.

in the u.s. length has nothing to do with the record size of fish, it’s weight only. i’m assuming it’s the same in canada. i also saw the e mail with three pictures. it’s an impressive fish no matter where it’s from.

This fish was in fact caught on Lake Ontario in CANADA. Where the other stories came from is bogus. This is truly a CANADIAN FISH and both pics are accurate and do match eachother.

@ shawn - the exif data shows that the 2 photos are from different cameras and taken on different days, and if you take a look a few comments up, there is a link to the the real story behind this awesome fish.
