I just like the competition. I've had a lot of fun playing Settlers recently. I thought at first it would be too deep to be a party type game, but some of my friends have really got into it. The first weekend I played it was at AvalonCon back in 1996. It was absolutely amazing. Technology has made flashier games, but for a good introduction to strategy games without a "war" component, Settlers is a fine choice for 7-9 year olds. There is just enough of a random element that smart children will win enough of the time to be happy, but enough strategy needed that silly play will not be rewarded.
