Where everyday is the weekend…

This Weekend in Sports (15-Jun-2007)

NBA Finals

Well the San Antonio Spurs are the NBA champions for the fourth time in the last decade. The Spurs dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers and Lebron James winning 4 games in a row. There has been a lot of discussion as to whether or not the Cavs are the worst team to ever make it to the Finals. That being said they have a superstar player that can do it all. With a little more cohesion and a couple more parts to the puzzle it won’t be surprising to see King James with a championship ring on his finger.

PGA – The US Open

The big story going into the US Open this year was Phil Mickelson injuring his wrist. US Opens are known for their devastatingly long rough where the grass wraps around the shaft of your club and jars your whole body as you try to hit out of it. That doesn’t bode well for Lefty’s injured wrist. After Day 1 Mickelson was 4 over, which isn’t all that bad for a guy with a wrist injury. Other notables have Tiger Woods 1 over, Vijay Singh 2 over, Ernie Els 3 over and the leader Nick Dougherty from Liverpool 2 under. Everyone loves an underdog so it will be fun to see if he can keep his good play going and not crack under the pressure of a major championship.

MLB

The New York Yankees are finally playing good ball, which is bad news for the rest of the American League. The Yankees are on a 9 game winning streak and find themselves 2 games over .500 and 7.5 back of the Boston Redsox. The Toronto Blue Jays are sitting in third in their division, a common place for them, and are starting to question their large contract offers to Vernon Wells and Frank Thomas. Both players have been a major disappointment at the plate this year. Thankfully for the Jays Dustin Mcgowan and Shaun Marcum have stepped up their game and shown that they can be everyday starters in any teams rotation.

Barry Bonds is now only 9 homeruns away from passing Hank Aaron for the all time home run record of 755. It won’t be long now before Bonds is considered the best baseball player ever in the history of Baseball. He’s a gold glove winner, an MVP, has over 700 home runs and 500 stolen bases. He has done just about everything one could do in a career. But he will always be tied to steroids and cheating which will be an issue when it comes to voting him into the hall of fame.

Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers threw a no hitter this week which was only the 6th in Tiger history. Verlander struck out 12 and walked 4.
